Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) —
Mugwort, a plant of thresholds and witches, is a powerful ally in plant magic for dream exploration, divination, purification, protection, and supporting cycles of transformation. Its energy, both gentle and powerful, opens and protects the path between worlds. Used with respect, it reveals access to the mysteries of the invisible and supports the healing of body, mind, and spirit.
- Identity and symbolism
- Family : Asteraceae
- Other names : St. John's Wort, Mugwort, Diana's Crown, Seer's Belt
- Element : Air (main), with a nuance of Fire
- Planet : Moon (intuition, dream, sacred feminine), sometimes Mars (protection, strength, action)
- Polarity : Feminine
- Symbolism : Plant of the in-between, of the threshold, guardian of passages, mediator between the visible and invisible worlds. Linked to changes, transformation, deep healing and the mysteries of the feminine.
2. Energy signature
- Mugwort grows on edges, paths, and wastelands: it symbolizes crossing, access to new interior or exterior territories.
- Its silvery, almost lunar foliage and its camphor scent reflect a power of purification, clairvoyance and elevation.
- Its strength lies in the ability to dissolve the veils between worlds, opening consciousness while providing strong protection.
3. Magical and ritual virtues
A) Activation of dreams, vision and psychic abilities
- Lucid & Prophetic Dreams : Mugwort, placed under the pillow or used as a light infusion, promotes intense dreams, dream memory, lucidity and the reception of symbolic messages.
- Astral travel : It helps to cross the boundaries of the physical body and travel in the subtle worlds, while ensuring anchoring upon return.
- Development of intuition : In incense or elixir, mugwort opens the third eye, refines the perception of energies, facilitates meditation and divination (tarot, crystal ball, runes).
- Shamanism : A tool for shamanic journeys, it guides and protects the soul during spiritual explorations.
B) Purification, banishment and energetic protection
- Fumigation : Burned in a bouquet or stick, it purifies the aura, drives away negative energies, dissolves unwanted entities or influences, cleanses and elevates the atmosphere of a place.
- Magic Shield : Worn as an amulet or scattered around a space, it creates a barrier against psychic attacks, spells, nightmares, and harmful presences.
- Releasing Bonds : It helps to cut toxic energetic attachments and free the mind from the grip of old patterns or trauma.
C) Plant thresholds, passages and transformations
- Transition rituals : Present during changes of cycle (solstice, equinox, passage of an age, mourning, new stage of life), it symbolically accompanies the crossing of a threshold, rebirth and metamorphosis.
- Circle of protection : Placed around an altar or sacred space, it demarcates the ritual territory and invites connection with benevolent spirits.
- Call to the ancestors : Used during Samhain or rituals of communication with the deceased, it serves as a guide between the worlds.
D) Support for the sacred feminine and healing
- Female cycles : Mugwort supports the menstrual cycle, promotes reconciliation with femininity, soothes pain and strengthens intuition.
- Emotional healing : in a ritual bath, it helps to release emotional burdens, to reconnect with oneself and one's inner power.
- Sisterhood : Used during women's circles, it promotes sharing, collective healing and the transmission of ancestral knowledge.
4. Tips for ritual use
- Smudging : Light a bunch or stick of dried mugwort and circulate the smoke around yourself, ritual objects, or in every corner of a space to purify and raise its vibration. Practice this gesture before any meditation or divination session, or when setting up a sacred space.
- Protective amulet : Slip dried leaves into a natural fabric sachet to carry on your person, under your pillow or in a pocket to benefit from the protection and inspiration of mugwort throughout the day.
- Ritual bath : Prepare a mugwort decoction to add to bath water to purify yourself, rid yourself of old energies and open yourself to a new stage of life or a particular intention.
- Divination incense : Mix dried mugwort with other plants (myrrh, lavender, sage, etc.) to create an incense to burn during tarot sessions, meditation, or communication with the invisible.
